While July is the month that most of us want to spend all of our time outdoors on the Creek, we hope you will join us indoors for our quarterly public meeting. 4 times a year we gather together as the large, inter-borough community to receive updates from all the agencies and groups who are collecting data as part of the Superfund process, have presentations about Superfund data and issues, ask questions, and most importantly, share our knowledge of the Newtown Creek area with those tasked with cleaning it up.
Newtown Creek Community Advisory Group (CAG) Quarterly Meeting
- Wed July 13, 2016
- 630pm – 830pm
-
LaGuardia Community CollegeRoom E24231-10 Thomson AvenueLIC, NY 11101
The meeting will start with updates from us, the CAG, the EPA, NYC DEP, and the Newtown Creek Group (NCG)/Anchor QEA. The EPA update will focus on what has been happening in the past 2 months, the current cleanup timeline, and the upcoming risk assessments. The EPA manages the oversight on all the Superfund activities on the Creek. DEP has a dual role on the Creek, being both a City agency tasked with monitoring and oversight on the Creek, they are also considered a primary polluter. They will be sharing an update on their activities on the Creek. The Newtown Creek Group is the collective group of primary polluters (minus the City) and Anchor QEA is the environmental engineering group they have hired to perform the investigation and data collection on the Creek. NCG will give an update on their recent activities on the Creek and the current timeline in the Phase 2 study.
The bulk of the meeting will be a presentation and discussion with reps from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). These three agencies comprise the Trustees group and will oversee a Natural Resources Damages Assessment (NRDA) as part of the Newtown Creek cleanup. It is a wonderful opportunity to restore damaged resources and environments on our beloved Newtown Creek. We look forward to hearing about their work and how the process works.”
Hope to see you on Wednesday. The next quarterly CAG meeting will be in Brooklyn in the Fall. Stay tuned for details.
